Key deadlines are coming up for student borrowers

Our union toolkit provides the top three resources to assist you in easing or erasing your student debt. 

On August 24, 2022, the Biden administration announced additional loan cancellation of $10,000 for most borrowers and $20,000 for recipients of federal Pell Grants. Biden also extended the deadline by four months for the restart of loan payments currently on pandemic pause. Learn more about Biden’s debt cancellation. 


  • October 31, 2022 — Expanded eligibility for debt relief under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program expires.
  • December 31, 2022 Federal student loan payments restart after being on pandemic pause. (Extended from the original deadline of September 1, 2022.)

1. Forgive My Student Debt

The AFT’s successful lawsuit in 2021 resulted in changes to the then-dysfunctional Public Service Loan Forgiveness program. The AFT’s victory has given hundreds of thousands of public sector workers workers with federal student loan debt access to promised loan forgiveness.

This AFT-affiliated website Forgive My Student Debt walks borrowers through the actions they need to take — depending on individual circumstances — to benefit from the waiver. The deadline to act for PSLF forgiveness is October 31, 2022.

2. Summer

AFT Summer Program

Not the season, but the AFT benefit program that helps you consolidate student debt

Summer is an online resource started by student loan borrowers who wanted to help others avoid bad information and bad actors in the student loan market. Summer harnesses the expertise of public policy experts and uses technology to make the process easy and secure.

The AFT trusts Summer to help union members navigate the student loan repayment landscape. You can also talk through options with Summer’s borrower success team to better understand your options. Using Summer, AFT members who enroll in this free member benefit can:

  • Complete the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Employment application process;
  • Enroll in income-driven repayment plans;
  • Find other loan forgiveness programs and get assistance in applying for them;
  • Sign up for Summer now!

3. AFT Student Debt Clinics

Student loan payments will restart for almost 4 million Californians at the start of 2023. These resources compiled by the Department of Financial Protection and Innovation help educate and empower California student loan borrowers about the programs available and deadlines. You can also sign up for DFPI’s student borrower newsletter. The CFT works in collaboration with the DFPI.
