Jeff Freitas, President of the California Federation of Teachers, released the following statement of support for the 50,000 UAW members striking at GM facilities across the country. The strike began at midnight on September 16 when their contract expired.

“As our brave UAW siblings walk the picket line, the members of CFT stand in solidarity with them. The nearly 50,000 striking auto workers have always been there for General Motors, rescuing the company during the Great Recession and now delivering record-breaking, multi-billion dollar profits. It is past time for GM to settle a contract that provides fair wages, affordable quality health care, a share of profits, a defined path to seniority for temps, and job security for their workers.”

The California Federation of Teachers represents 120,000 teachers, faculty, and school employees in public and private schools and colleges, from early childhood through higher education. It is the statewide affiliate of the AFT. More information at www.cft.org.
