What is a Community School?
Online Training

Training Training Department

Governor Newsom has allocated $3 billion in the state budget for 2021-22 to help expand existing community schools and establish new ones, and the CFT is excited to announce the launch of our Community Schools training program.

Our initial online training is designed to give PreK-12 union leaders a brief overview and understanding of community schools as well as the capacity to assess your current school climate and determine if it would be a good candidate to become a community school. We are offering the training on two different days, September 21 and September 29.

What are Community Schools?

  • Community schools provide a framework for school improvement that taps into our value system and belief that every child deserves a high-quality, equitable public education.
  • Community schools can help overcome the barriers to learning created by poverty and a lack of opportunities by utilizing and coordinating existing resources so that all children can become career, community, and college ready.
  • Community schools embody solution-driven unionism and have the potential to mobilize members and build ties to the community while fighting back against those who wish to defund, destabilize and privatize public education.

If you are interested in your school becoming a community school, the CFT will be offering an in-depth training series developed by AFT in October and November. The decision to become a community school is made by the school itself, and the school would be required to establish a writing team and complete the application.

Please join us for this exciting opportunity to transform your school into a community school and to help our educational communities thrive and succeed.
