Ensuring a Safe Return to In-Person Instruction
Regional Workshop – North Bay Area

Training Training Department

School employees are facing growing pressure to return to in-person instruction. This comes while the pandemic continues to rage across California, amidst constantly shifting guidance in criteria to reopen in-person, and changing priorities from the state regarding who need to be vaccinated first. Navigating these shifting policies can be overwhelming. What needs to be negotiated? How are existing regulations enforced? How (and when) do we get our school employees vaccinated?

To help local leaders and staff better understand these policies and fully advocate on behalf of our members and students, we are holding regional workshops to explain and discuss the following:

  1. Current county COVID-19 status
  2. Criteria for returning to in-person instruction
  3. The duty to bargain: what it covers, and what actions are required
  4. Advocating for opportunities to get vaccinated
  5. COVID-19 Safety Plans and minimum requirements (CalOSHA and CDPH)
  6. Enforcement mechanisms and opportunities for action

Because of the disparity between regions in both COVID-19 status and political climates, we are holding separate working groups for each region. We strongly encourage every local union to have someone attend the workshop for their region. If you are unable to attend the workshop for your region, you are welcome to join one of the others (just keep in mind the discussions and breakouts will be focused on that region).

Although the pressure to return in-person is currently focused on K-12 schools, much of the information covered in these workshops is applicable to all of our worksites, and we encourage every local union to participate.
