Strengthen Protections and Education for All under the Trump Administration

Resolution

Whereas, the freezes on federal grants, aid, and funding are attacks on higher education research and higher education workers, halting research that is in progress and putting workers’ jobs at risk;

Whereas, education is a fundamental right under the California Constitution;

Whereas, attention to access, diversity, equity and inclusion, including programs that enhance access for undocumented and DACA students, is fundamental to the extension of that right to every student in California;

Whereas, the “biological reality of sex” is not “immutable,” nor is there a single “biological reality of sex,” as claimed in a Trump administration executive order, dated January 20, 2025;

Whereas, the exclusion of gender, gender identity, and sexual orientation from Title IX removes explicit protection of transgender, nonbinary, intersex, and LGBQ+ persons from discrimination;

Whereas, the National Labor Relations Board protects workers’ rights to “join together, with or without a union, to improve their wages and working conditions,” protects workers’ rights to unionize, enhances the ability of workers to win their union representation elections, and helps protect workers’ rights by adjudicating cases of alleged labor law violations;

Whereas, President Trump has signaled that his administration intends to weaken both the NLRB and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, by removing members of those boards, leaving both without a quorum;

Therefore, be it resolved, that CFT shall advocate with the governor and state legislature to take action to mitigate the harms incurred by the Trump administration’s attacks on public and private education, both fiscal and ideological;

Be it further resolved, that CFT shall develop recommendations that will enable educational institutions to develop or otherwise continue programs that promote equity and ensure that education continues to be a fundamental right;

Be it finally resolved, that CFT shall advocate to strengthen the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement and the Public Employment Relations Board with the goal of overcoming harms caused by Trump Administration attacks on the National Labor Relations Board.
