Stop Requiring Undocumented Students from Providing Social Security Numbers

Resolution

Whereas, many immigrants in California use Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs) rather than Social Security numbers, and ITINs are accepted for professional licensure, background checks, and other official purposes; and
Whereas, many of these immigrants want to take CTE classes in Adult Education in order to prepare for good jobs and careers; and
Whereas, some adult schools are requiring prospective CTE students to show a Social Security card or number in order to enroll in certain CTE programs,
Therefore be it resolved, that CFT advocate for legislation to prohibit an immigrant student from being denied admission to an Adult Ed pre-apprenticeship, apprenticeship or any CTE training program if the student uses an ITIN for the purpose of the background check required by the class or program.
