CFT Supports the People of Minnesota in Their Protest Against ICE
Whereas, it has been over 225 days since federal immigration authorities began their siege in Los Angeles; and
Whereas, on December 31, 2025, Keith Porter Jr., a 43-year-old father of two in Northridge, California, was shot and killed by an off-duty ICE agent who lived in his apartment complex, leading to grief, vigils, and demands for accountability from family members, community organizations, and civil rights advocates; and
Whereas, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has expanded its geographical scope of kidnapping and terrorizing California’s people from LA to the Bay Area and the many communities in between; and
Whereas, thousands of our neighbors and family members across California–along with our colleagues, our students, and others from our campus communities–have been kidnapped and brutalized; and
Whereas, many CFT members are living with the fear, anxiety, and rage that stem from being targeted themselves; and
Whereas, Black and Brown people and multiple immigrant and refugee communities have historically been targeted by centralized power, most recently embodied by ICE agents in California, as well as throughout the U.S.; and
Whereas, ICE raids in our streets are an escalation of the institutionalized oppression of civil rights that BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and disabled people have experienced for decades; and
Whereas, the people across the country are fighting back against the same illegal, violent attacks we are experiencing in California; and
Whereas, on January 7, 2026, Renee Michelle Good was killed by an ICE agent while peacefully observing ICE action in her neighborhood and attempting to vacate the area, a neighborhood only a few blocks away from where George Floyd was also killed by militarized law enforcement; and
Whereas, the lawful and peaceful protest of the people of Minneapolis has been met by increasing violence by ICE officers, including the use of pepper spray against peaceful protestors and passersby, including the pepper spraying of an African-American family, injuring their five-year-old child; and
Whereas, our Minnesota union siblings are
fighting back and resisting the authoritarian regime taking hold
of their state, by calling for a statewide action (https://minneapolisunions.org/system/files/2026-
01/press_release_-_january_16_2026.pdf?ref=paydayreport.com);
and
Whereas, on March 31, 2017 at the 75th CFT Convention, CFT delegates led by President Joshua Pechthalt and Vice President Kent Wong marched to and protested outside of the Sacramento ICE Field office, to end “an environment of fear [that] envelops our schools and communities;” and
Whereas, on October 4, 2025, the CFT State Council passed a resolution titled “Abolish ICE and End Militarization of Our Communities which calls for the end of militarizing the federal police force and abolishing the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) because of their threats to the residents of our communities.
Therefore, be it resolved that the CFT will provide financial and other assistance to our community and labor partners in Minnesota as they resist the authoritarian actions happening in this country; and
Therefore, be it resolved that CFT will continue to prepare our local unions and members to respond to the authoritarian acts here and across the nation with training on legal observing, peaceful non-violent demonstrations, and immigration rights and protection trainings; and
Therefore, be it resolved that the CFT will continue to stand against militarized policing within our communities in this country, including ICE, and will continue to fight for our collective civil rights, and for the social and racial justice that every person deserves.
