Job Summary

The CFT is the California affiliate of the AFT, AFL-CIO, representing education workers in public and private schools and colleges, from early childhood through higher education.

The Field Manager’s role is to lead, support, and coordinate the work of field representatives that work with existing locals to ensure consistent, effective organizing, bargaining, and member engagement across the state. The Field Manager is a member of the leadership team, responsible for overseeing and coordinating the CFT’s operational, field, and internal organizing work. The Field Manager supervises all field representatives to ensure CFT’s field programs are aligned, effective, and accountable to the organization’s strategic goals.

The Field Manager may represent the CFT in meetings with other organizations and coalitions and provides regular reports to the CFT Executive Council, State Council, and officers. The Field Manager plays a staff leadership role for ensuring the successful efforts of CFT.  The Field Manager reports directly to the Chief Operations Manager.

Frequent evening and weekend work, as well as travel for union activities, is required.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide direction, training, evaluation, and oversight of all field representatives
  • Coordinate onboarding with the Chief of Staff, staff coordination, and professional development logistics as needed
  • Conduct at least bi-weekly one-on-one meetings with each member of the field department
  • Serve as a substitute field representative as needed, at the direction of the Chief Operations Manager 
  • Ensure field reps are successfully helping to build leaders and move campaigns by coaching, holding accountable, disciplining, tracking and assisting them to develop goals and plans
  • Assist local leaders as needed
  • Oversee the Formula Funded Staff Program
  • May act as a liaison with the AFT on joint projects of the state and national unions in coordination with the Chief of Staff
  • Arrange and coordinate staff meetings and trainings for the field department
  • Coordinate internal communications and ensure consistent information flow across departments
  • Make recommendations regarding the necessary staff and budgetary resources required to support CFT locals, CFT priorities, and carry out the CFT’s mission
  • Represent CFT and AFT in meetings with other organizations and coalitions as requested
  • Other duties as assigned by the CFT President and the Chief Operations Manager

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

  • Demonstrated five years of experience directing, supervising, managing, and evaluating a large and diverse staff
  • Demonstrated experience managing human resource staff matters
  • Demonstrated experience negotiating contracts and labor agreements
  • Demonstrated experience organizing and representing workers
  • Experience in the labor movement, preferably in California
  • Knowledge and experience in the American labor movement, its structure, philosophy, and goals
  • Knowledge of the California Education Code and the practice of collective bargaining
  • Knowledge of public and private sector labor laws
  • Knowledge of critical issues facing education and public sectors in California and the United States
  • Knowledge of key issues facing the U.S. labor movement
  • Ability to facilitate team meetings and trainings, including agenda setting, collaborative decision making, task follow through, and evaluation
  • Ability to work in a high-pressure environment
  • Ability to communicate effectively while working under pressure and to make public presentations to audiences in a range of venues
  • Ability to take charge and to direct, develop and coordinate activities and campaigns
  • Ability to render judgments, make decisions, and take appropriate action
  • Ability to accurately and coherently compose correspondence, charges, grievances, flyers, and bargaining language
  • Ability to coordinate the ongoing functions of several task groups simultaneously
  • Ability to develop imaginative approaches to complex issues and challenges
  • Ability to coach, mentor, support and guide staff and leaders
  • Ability to analyze budgets
  • Current California driver’s license
