SACRAMENTO, CA – CFT – A Union of Educators and Classified Professionals released the following statement today from President Jeff Freitas in response to the Supreme Court ruling in favor of Trump’s cruel and inhumane racial profiling-based detentions and arrests in Los Angeles:
“Today’s Supreme Court decision draws our nation further into authoritarianism as the majority of justices have voted to allow the Trump Administration to round up people based on the color of their skin, the language they speak, or the job they work. Our highest court now equates low-wage work with committing a crime, which shows how far out of touch these Trump aligned Justices are with everyday Americans. When it is not safe for close to 20% of Americans to leave their homes to buy groceries, take their children to school, or attend houses of worship, we can no longer call our nation a democracy.
“The Fourth Amendment promises every one of us to be, ‘free from arbitrary interference by law officers,’ but that is now a right reserved only for some.
“As high school government teachers across the state return to their classrooms, ready to educate our next generation of leaders, we can no longer say the Constitution applies to all. And for that, our nation mourns.”
