Happy 100th Birthday, CFT!!!
CFT celebrates 100 years of solidarity
The first AFT local in California was organized in Vallejo by J.P. Utter in 1918-19 as AFT Local 26. He and others spent 1919 organizing and chartering more locals. Toward the end of the school year, Utter called together the leaders of the eight locals in San Francisco. This was the founding meeting of the California State Federation of Teachers.
At the end of the one-day meeting, the CSFT had A Professional Creed, officers, and a future. Samuel MacLean, a Sacramento teacher, was elected president and each local represented had a vice president. Our state Federation was born.
