September 25—Tom Torlakson, CFT's endorsed candidate for State Superintendent of Public Instruction, made an appearance before the CFT's State Council in Los Angeles.  He vowed to replace the current regime of "punitive accountability" for teachers with "positive accountabiity."  Torlakson, who taught for twenty five years in high school and community college before launching his political career, told the crowd about his breakfast that morning with Diane Ravitch, the author of The Death and LIfe of the Great American School System, who had talked the night before at a meeting of one thousand UTLA members.  Torlakson is shown here accepting a "Yes on Prop 25" t-shirt from CFT president Marty Hittelman.  Fred Glass photo
