Topics Discussed:

Community College Contract language was the committee’s big success - A Framework for Contract Negotiations Related to Ed Tech issues  ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) – CFT has already conducted a survey about how we use the ubiquitous technology – without having an understanding about the personal and professional issues related to the document – is it already obsolete?  Is this a good document – does it need to be updated? Can Don Brown speak to the group as the original author to provide a history of the doc?

Greg’s Resolution Re: Google and Information Privatization must be submitted to Alameda Office by Feb 5

CFT website improvements

We need to submit a workshop request for the committee

Committee wants to survey attendees to find out how they use technology

Staff Development and support around Technology for veteran teachers

Develop a list of questions for the attorney around Privacy issues  and security concerns around Web 2.0 (social networking) and issues of academic freedom – is this protected under the academic freedom policies or do they need to expand

General concept for workshop: Martin will be doing something on Leadernet at the Convention already – thinks issues on Facebook or social networking would be more appropriate at the convention; how to use the tools – use the social networking to communicate (organize and educate membership) on the March.  Video podcasting as an organizing tool;  Twitter field Rep (Nygunen);  Zach Dowell from Folsom Lake College has done web 2.0.

Who is the audience?  No experience, some experience? There is the issue of a technology divide. Idea of a breakout in the session for advanced and beginners.

Intros to the various web 2.0  - 4 or 5 topics and some breakouts with HOW-TO – given at a VERY basic level

Survey on exposure level and uses – concern is that there is less than a month and ½ to plan and pull this off. A staffed table for follow-up conversations

1.5 hour panel presentation – illustrate 4 or 5 different applications and then a Q/A – Friday @ 1:30 is available;  KC thinks that we HAVE to have some Q/A time at the end – maybe presenters could be available for informal follow-ups; if we can’t get the 1.5 hour slot then get the slot on Saturday a.m. and maybe a follow-up workshop on the same day

Identify 5 regular ongoing tasks or the responsibilities for Locals and then demonstrate the application in that context

Possible incentive to complete the survey would be an iPod Shuffle – do we have $100?

AFT is ALREADY doing a social networking workshop at the convention  (We need that contact info)

Collective Bargaining surveying – create online surveys through leadernet – elections are run electronic

Ieee or Plato or any cbt training

Communicating Political Action

Action Taken:

Internal Contact list of Committee members

Submitted Convention Workshop to CFT

We need to get results from Previous CFT survey that was shown at the state council – membership surveyed by an outside consultant – Martin will get us a copy of this survey

Resolution – to create online training opportunities/modules

Approved Greg’s Resolution on Information Privatization via the Google Books Library Project

Changed action to be point-people on the committee for various web 2.0

1:10 committee discussion about purpose

A vehicle to inform and to protect membership from the policies that may harm the membership

There is an assumption that HS students KNOW how to use technology that they NEED to know – they are not as computer-savvy as most people think

We acknowledge that most kids know technology web2 tools better than their teachers.

We need to look at how tech affects educators in the near and distant future – if we can set CFT policy about technology and how it affects the workforce

How can we use technology to strengthen the union?

If I am a faculty member asked to do a distance learning course – what should I be looking at – where are the landmines?

What is the purpose of the Framework document – what do we want out of it? Is it a reference guide that is readily available?  Bob – please comment…

CREATE an informational flyer that lets people at the convention know what Ed Tech does and post online?

Kathy hopes we can develop a database of issues and possible language – for example, her district has passed a Board policy stating that no teachers may have current students as their ‘facebook friends’

Future Plans:

  • Approve the Framework related to Tech Issues – Martin placed this on the internet http://Mycft.org/ The   login:  firstinitial, lastname  (gsotir)   Pwd: cft_etc
  • Resolution – to create online training opportunities/modules
  • Define/Hone what the MISSION of this committee is
  • Contact Don Brown and ask him to address current committee re: his CC policy/framework document

Most important mission for the committee work this year is:

We MUST be informed as a committee in order to formulate policies and recommendations to support and protect faculty and the union

Joe will guarantee ½ of a table at the convention – Terry E will let Joe know what the table sign will say (If you have a brainstorm on this, let Terry E know)

Can we get Thumb drives with Union info to pass out at the convention?

Martin – will make sure we all have access to the Framework document via Google docs
