Convention delegates will be decisive in 2012
Want to make a difference in 2012? Plan now to get elected as a delegate to the CFT Convention that will be held April 13-15 at The Fairmont San Jose. With the theme “Our State, Our Future, Our Fight,” the Convention boasts an impressive line-up of speakers and workshops. Saturday workshop offerings are geared toward active participation in the 2012 General Election and passing the CFT-sponsored statewide progressive tax measure.
The Convention will also elect delegates to the AFT and the California Labor Federation Conventions. But the Convention isn’t all work; there’s time for fun as well, with receptions and get-togethers. Convention is open to all CFT members, with elected delegates representing their local unions and having the right to vote. The Convention is the Federation’s highest policymaking body; delegates shape union positions on issues affecting members.
Delegates must be elected following the legal requirements in the AFT and CFT Constitutions and the federal Landrum-Griffin Act. Under these rules, each member shall have a reasonable opportunity to be nominated as a delegate, and local unions must mail a notice to members at least 15 days before the election. The elections must be held by secret ballot, the results must be published, and records must be kept for one year. Look for notice of the election from your local union or contact it to learn when elections for delegates will be held.
