May 9, 2011—The CFT has launched 60 second radio spots featuring the voice of a high school language arts teacher in selected Republican districts, timed to coincide with the "Week of Action." The teacher, Amelia Fitzgerald, received a March 15 notice due to fiscal uncertainties, following the refusal of any Republican legislator to support Jerry Brown's proposed extension of current taxes. The CFT hopes to enourage these legislators to reconsider their position, and vote to support the tax extensions. Without them, the state will be cutting programs and laying off more teachers and education support workers, on top of the thousands already out the door. As a language teacher, Ms. Fitzgerald tells Republican legislators she can 'translate' their "no new taxes" pledge: it means "Lay off teachers, lay off firefighters, lay off police." The radio spots include a phone number that connects callers with their legislator. Click here to listen to radio spots.
