Proposition 80
The affordable electricity and blackout prevention act

Prop 80 is a common-sense consumer initiative that will help prevent energy blackouts and massive fraud by unregulated private energy producers like Enron. It will repeal failed energy deregulation policies, put utilities back in the business of serving the public, and encourage development of more renewable energy sources. The ultimate result will be more affordable energy for all Californians.

Based on Assembly Bill 2006, vetoed by Governor Schwarzenegger last year, Prop 80 would prevent a repeat of the biggest policy mistake in California's history. Electricity deregulation brought California rolling black-outs, markets manipulated by corporate profiteers, and cost the state—and consumers—tens of billions of dollars.

Prop 80 would restore the obligation of large electricity companies to serve the public. It would require all electricity providers to maintain adequate reserves, as was the case before deregulation. It would decrease the state's dependence on expensive fossil fuels by speeding up the state's 20% renewable energy requirement from 2017 to 2010.

Vote YES on Proposition 80.
