Tracked in America

The California Federation of Teachers is proud to be a public education partner with the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California on its "Tracked in America: Stories from the History of U.S. Government Surveillance" program. "Tracked in America" is just the type of historical curriculum we need in public schools to help teachers and students reflect clearly on the rights of citizens and responsibilities of government in difficult political times. At a moment when Congress has just handed the President a dubious gift in the form of legislation eliminating habeas corpus from our rights under law, "Tracked in America" is all the more necessary. If history is any guide to the present, the abuses carried out today will be repudiated tomorrow. But in the meantime many will suffer. A careful reading of "Tracked in America" by as many people as possible may well help that gap in time be shorter, and the number of individuals unfairly targeted and harmed fewer.
