The state budget, progressive taxes, and public services
Building a movement: Pajaro Valley

Two hundred teachers and supporters from the community came to the PVUSD school board meeting on Wednesday, May 8 to protest budget cuts, in the latest effort by the teacher union to save quality public education from the impact of the state budget deficit, compounded by school district mismanagement. The PVUSD is the only district in the state to demand salary cuts from its teachers and support staff to address the state's budget problems.

More than one hundred and forty certificated employees of the Pajaro Valley Unified School District were issued March 15th notices by the district. At a press conference on Wednesday, March 19 in front of Radcliff Elementary School, representatives of the school district and community flanked Assemblymember Anna Caballero, who denounced the education funding cuts proposed by Governor Schwarzenegger that led to the layoff notices. Francisco Rodriguez, president of the Pajaro Valley Federation of Teachers, joined Caballero in calling for increased state revenues, rather than cuts, to address the state budget problems.
