The state budget, progressive taxes, and public services
Building a movement: Pico RIvera

Kindergarten teacher Marisa Almada and second grade teacher Jesus Lopez were among speakers at a rally in front of North Ranchito Elementary School in Pico Rivera on Monday, March 10. Almada has been teaching in the El Rancho School District for six years; Lopez, for eight years. Of the twenty four teachers at North Ranchito Elementary, twelve—including Almada and Lopez—are receiving layoff notices this week due to Governor Schwarzenegger's proposed budget cuts for next year. Almada is holding up her "March 15 letter." Almada and her husband had just applied for a home loan. Lopez doesn't know how he is going to make his house payments and provide for his eight month old daughter. Also speaking at the rally were parents, classified staff, school administrators and CFT president Marty Hittelman.
