The state budget, progressive taxes, and public services
Building a movement: Berkeley

Members of the Berkeley Federation of Teachers are joined by parents, students, and the district Superintendent of Instruction to create a "human billboard" along Martin Luther King, Jr. Way in front of the BUSD district headquarters on March14. The entire chain of letters spells out "No cuts! Increase state revenue!" The brainchild of elementary teacher Sam Frankel, this was the first in a planned series of rallies and public events to protest the issuance of layoff notices to 55 teachers and call for fair state tax policies that increase revenues from the rich and corporations to support necessary public services. Wednesday April 9 a larger rally was held, captured on a YouTube video. Mark Coplan photo
