| Building a movement: Los Angeles |

Thirty thousand teachers in the Los Angeles Unified School District took their anger at the governor's proposed 4.3 billion dollars in school budget cuts to the streets on June 6. The teachers sacrificed an hour's pay to make their point: that in a state where class sizes are among the highest in the nation, and per-pupil spending ranks 46th in the nation, budget cuts are not acceptable. The teachers' union, UTLA, instead joined with CFT and called for increasing revenues to the state to close the budget gap. Kim Turner, photos
The CFT is working on coordinated efforts with other education organizations and allies in the labor movement and broader community to convince the public and elected officials in Sacramento that the budget deficit must be addressed through fair tax policies.
