School superintendents--not usually noted for their militancy--call a rally attended by teachers and students at Santa Cruz High School to protest budget cuts and call for increased revenues to support public education on March 20. Holding sign in photo at left is Barry Kirschen, president of the Greater Santa Cruz Federation of Teachers. In photo at right, Kirschen speaks on April 4 at a forum, also at Santa Cruz High School, where Lieutenant Governor John Garamendi (seated) spoke against the cuts to K-12 schools and higher education. More than two hundred education employees have received layoff notices in Santa Cruz County. Robert Chacanaca photo
