Berkeley classified employees rally for contract
More than 100 classified employees working in the Berkeley Unified School District and their boisterous supporters— teachers and firefighters— marched to district headquarters after school to demand a fair contract on September 10. The classified workers, members of the Berkeley Council of Classified Employees, Local 6192, have been more than a year without a contract and haven't yet gotten a salary offer for the 06-07 school year, let alone the new academic year. The Council of Classified Employees (CCE) is an organization dedicated
to supporting classified employee members of the CFT. Throughout California, the CCE represents thousands
of classified employees working as bus drivers, secretaries and
office workers, paraprofessionals and teaching assistants, custodians
and maintenance workers, food service workers, and other non-certificated
employees in early childhood centers, schools, and on college campuses.
The CCE is a division of the California Federation of Teachers
(CFT). The CFT is an affiliate of the over one million-member American
Federation of Teachers, which represents 200,000 classified employees
nationwide.
