What is I, Tomato?

I Tomato , a reading for fourth graders, is available from the California Federation of Teachers. This 24-page booklet includes the story of one tomato, as it grows from seed to fruit, and is transported from farm to market to consumer, as told by the tomato. The story focuses on the important work performed by farm laborers in the tomato's growth and delivery to market.

When you ask most small children, especially those in urban or suburban schools, where their food comes from, they say, "the supermarket." I, Tomato lets them know the real story, tracing back the food chain and giving students an understanding of all the complex processes and hard work involved in bringing food to their tables.

This fourth grade level reader comes in English and Spanish, in the same booklet. I, Tomato was written by San Francisco elementary teacher Bill Morgan, and translated by Sylvia Ramirez. Cost: $3
