What is Let Me Tell You About This Man?

Let Me Tell You About This Man: Cesar Chavez, Union Organizer, a reading for fourth and fifth graders, is available from the California Federation of Teachers. This 32-page booklet focuses on the life and achievements of Cesar Chavez, union and civil rights leader.

Chavez's life is traced in twelve short chapters. The focus is on the hard work Chavez and his family performed in the fields of Arizona and California, and the desire of one man to change the conditions that he felt stood in the way of farmworkers and their right to live with dignity.

The booklet portrays Chavez as an ordinary man who achieved extraordinary things for himself and his people because of his abilities and dedication as a union organizer. His greatest achievement was not just to found a farmworkers' union. As the booklet shows, other unions came and went in the fields of California over many decades. The unique achievement of Chavez as union leader was to build the first farm labor union that has lasted, four decades later, to this day.

This elementary reader comes in English and Spanish, in the same booklet, with study questions. Let Me Tell You About This Man was written by San Francisco elementary teacher Bill Morgan, and translated by Sylvia Ramirez. Cost: $3
